A Qantas flight was forced to return to Sydney Airport after a scare mid-flight triggered a precautionary response from the crew.

Flight QF2160 departed Sydney just before 9am on Friday en route to Port Macquarie.

But it was forced to turn around over Sydney’s Northern Beaches, according to flight tracking data from Flightradar24.

It is understood the decision to turn the plane around was prompted by the activation of a smoke alarm on-board.
