An incident in international air traffic caused a stir at Berlin’s BER airport last Thursday. A Boeing 787-9 of the airline Qatar Airways, en route on the afternoon flight QR82 from Berlin to Doha, had to turn around shortly after takeoff and land safely back in Schönefeld.

The reason: the smell of fire in the cockpit. The crew decided to return immediately and, just to be on the safe side, had the fire brigade ready to wait on the ground for the plane to arrive. Fortunately, after several hours of testing, the plane was cleared for further flight that same evening, so that the passengers could continue their journey with only a few hours’ delay.
